Truly what a man can do, a woman can do better, and truly they are the powerhouse of this era of entrepreneurship.
Women are the powerhouse of entrepreneurship according to former U.S President Barack Obama.
Nkiru Iyabo Emodi is the CEO, Home of Theresa Wears HOTwears on Instagram. She has caused ripples in recent weeks for what she is; a cobbler. She handcrafts her designs from the comfort of her home and has handmade well over 1500 pairs of shoes.
Nkiru designs mostly for men with style and elegance etched into their personalities who give her specifications of how they would like their shoes designed. Having graduated from UNIBEN in 2010 with a degree in Accounting, she started making shoes with little capital after facing challenges trying to secure a white collar job.
“After school, it was difficult and challenging for me to secure a job and at the same time I did not want to stay idle so I thought it wise to do business,” says Nkiru who didn’t have enough capital at the time. “I met with people to talk about the idea of the business and also to ask for a loan. Majority turned me down saying I should go get a job, work for some period of time before thinking of business.”
Nkiru soon found a man who saw the business idea from a different angle. “He also would not give me money, but an advice. He said ‘I do not have fish to give you… If you are willing to learn how to fish, I will teach you.’ He said if I learn how to make foot wears using the same high quality leather materials used to produce the leather foot wears I want to buy and sell, not only will I create and design, but gradually I’ll grow and have my own foot wears factory. At that point, I became so interested and ready to learn.”
“After 3 months of learning, I wanted to stop but then I’d remember the words of wisdom the elderly man gave me and encouraged myself. My mantra became ‘I can do this.’ As time went by, I started discovering some hidden talents I never knew I had, I never knew I could sketch. I saw myself doing things I normally would not do on a normal day. The passion and love for creating and designing foot wears grew and won’t stop growing.”
