“Based on the information we have at this time, it was an act of terrorism (…) particularly cowardly,” said the Democratic mayor during a press conference, which also indicated that “it is a very painful day for our city”.

“We know that we have lost the lives of eight innocent people and more than a dozen were wounded,” de Blasio added.

For its part, the New York Democratic Governor, Andrew Cuomo, stressed that the city “is an international symbol of freedom and democracy.”

“That also makes us an objective for those people who oppose those concepts and we’ve lived this before,” he said.

President Donald Trump called the attack an act of madness. “In NYC, it seems to be another attack by a very sick and disturbed person,” the president tweeted. “The authorities follow this closely. NOT IN THE USA! ”
